Merged Clip and Proxie Help

Hi. I'm relatively new to working with Adobe Premiere. So, please don't get too technical with your answers if possible.

I have the most current version of Premiere because I have a subscription. My footage is 4K. I know how to make basic proxies as well as how to merge my camera footage with the separate audio footage. But Premiere won't let me make proxies out of the merged clips. And it's not letting me make edits to the merged clip. How can I make a proxy out of the merged clip and how can I edit the merged clip? I don't know if this also makes a difference or not - my computer is a Dell.
