mp3 Audio file not supported in Premiere Pro

So imprting video material works fine. But when I tried to import music I always get the alert "File format not supported". The music is an mp3 file. Do I maybe have to change something in the settings??

Please tell us your system specs: OS version, Premiere version, amount of RAM, Hardware specs including graphics card.  And where did you get the .mp3 file?  generally mp3 files will play in premiere but they're not recommended for a number of reasons.  Ideally convert to either wav or aiff 48k 16 bit...  If you're on a mac, does the mp3 file play in itunes or quicktime player and on windows, whatever the default is for windows...

It might have copy protection.

And as mgrenadier said, it is recommended to convert mp3 to wav before importing into Premiere Pro.

not just converting to wav (or aiff).  It's a good idea to match the sampling rate for audio throughout your project.  Although you may be able to mix sampling rates, there can be issues that will bite you on the behind just when you least expect it...  standard video uses 48k sampling but if all your sources are 44.1, you can stick with that.

As a doc editor I'm often working with very long timelines (>1 hr) in Premiere, so keeping decoding at a minimum is clutch for performance.  But is Premiere really doing much less work playing an AIFF/WAV file than an MP3/M4A one?  I've found it hard to tell.

Talking to audio post people, I've gotten the impression that converting lossy formats to lossless  formats doesn't actually improve the quality of the sound for mixing, but if it helps Premiere playback more smoothly, of course I'd do it.

It's like working with variable framerate media. Sometimes it works OK, but there's no guarantee.

Conversion to wav always works. Your choice of course.
