Are you wanting to "preview render" for smooth editing?   You might consider a proxy workflow.  

I edit 4K from three cameras on a laptop with 16 GB of RAM.   I start by creating the proxies and then change the playback resolution to 1/2.  Editing is smooth including the use of the multicam view and tools.
