My video plays in the program window but when I pause it goes black

(yes i did reduce my playback and pause resolution to 1/4 which is as low as it will go, but it still goes back to black when I pause)

So I just started editing my first video, and when I finally got to cutting down the video footage, every time I pause to locate where I want to cut, the video preview goes away and it just shows black.  I have no idea how I am supposed to edit without being able to see what I'm cutting.  Help, please!

Premiere Pro 2020

MacOS Mojave version 10.14.6

Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB

1.6 GHz Intel Core i5 processor
