Playback lag in Program window/timeline only?

Cutting a project which is 1TB of 4K ProRes footage converted to GoPro Cineform proxies at lowest resolution.  I've barely laid down 3-4 clips on the timeline and I am getting playback lag, but only in the Program window (ie. not in Source window).

Have already tried the following:

- setting playback to 1/8 quality and toggling proxies

- allocating all available memory to Premiere under Memory preferences

- changing Sequence Settings to match proxy codec and disabling Maximum Render Quality and Composite in Linear Colour options

Raw footage is stored on 2TB external USB drive, proxies are on system drive.

Cutting on a 2015 MacBook Pro with an AMD Radeon M370X, 2.5Ghz and 16GB memory.

Fairly new to PP so any help would be much appreciated.

Same problem here and it's a software bug. If you click on the source window and then click on program monitor and hit space bar it should play with no drop frame, but when you work on time line and press spacebar it will be very laggy. Somehting is wrong with premeier pro and I lost a half a day of editing till I found out that it's a software issue. And it seems adobe support is not paying attention to this issue.

usb external drive is proberbly the culprit.

I would put both on an internal drive and not the system drive.

I am using Lacie with thunderbolt port connected to my mac.Checked even speed of my drive with blackmagic and all was good for what I am doing.  I even copied the footage on my internal drive to test and didn't work, even this is not a solution when I am working with few TB of data for each project.
