Premiere Pro and Kernel panic with Mac OS Catalina and iMac 20,1

Hi,

I recently upgraded my iMac with a new iMac 20,1 (Intel Core i7 with 8 cores, Radeon 5500XT) I have 40GB Ram (but it doesn't work even with the standard 8gb bars). Everything works fine, but I can't use Premiere Pro.

When I open a project everything looks fine. If I add to the project a single file, still it does work. When I add 3-4 files, my iMac starts to freeze, then it shows black screen of death, and finally reboots in a minute. What could it be?

Update: after upgrading my iMac to MacOS Big Sur, everything worked flawlessly and now I'm using Premiere Pro 14.5.

So it was a kinda strange problem with Catalina.

I can just suggest a few mac troubleshooting steps.  First, what version of premiere are you working with?  You might try installing premiere 2019 and see if that works.  It should still be available from the creative cloud app.  This may seem like a silly question but have you restarted the mac?  Do you have any peripherals connected except for keyboard and mouse?  If so, try disconnecting them.  You might try disconnecting from any network or internet by either pulling the ethernet cable or or tuning off wifi.  Try creating a new user with administrative privileges in system preferences:  users and groups and then loggin in as the new user.  Please answer all these questions in a systematic fashion.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

1)I'm using the last version of Premiere, 14.5. When I downgrade to 13.0 with Creative Cloud, it works fine, with no problems at all. I tried to create a project with 100 files in 4K and it was good.

2) Yes, I restarted the mac, tried with other sticks of RAM, with no peripheals and without wifi.

3)Yes, I tried also to start it with another user, but it didn't work.

you might try installing an earlier version of Premiere 14.  With each incremental upgrade there are always people who have issues  so you might find a version that gives you some of the new features without the "tsuris."

Not sure what else to suggest except 2 arcane things.  First is zapping the p-ram.  In case you don't know how to do this, you restart holding down command-option p r and keep the keys held down til it restarts 3 or 4 times.  This apparently resets some very basic things and has over the years occasionally solved a problem (although this doesn't sound like it).  The other is the "guiness" solution.  Shut down, unplug the computer and walk away for 10 minutes or so (just enuf time for a beer) and then plug the sucker back in and start up.  This apparently allows the "capacitors" (whatever they are) to lose any residual charge.  This has actually solved a few mac problems for me over the years.  Had an 80 year old friend call me a few days ago cause her television wasn't playing any sound...  We tried all the obvious things and then I told her to try the guiness solution, and it solved the problem.  Neither of these things has any downside as far as I know except liver issues if you have to do the guiness 10 or 12 times a day.   Oh yeah, this stroll down memory lane reminded me that although it's never worked for me, you might try installing and running Onyx which apparently will force the mac to run certain maintainence routines.

Post back if you want to keep digging in to this.  I'm always looking for an excuse not to do the work I should be doing.  and if any of this does solve the problem, please post back so you can help others who may have the same issue (and it always does my ego a little good).

Hi, thanks for your kindness.
I tried everything you suggested, unfortunately nothing works. If I downgrade my Premiere Pro to any version (14.0 to 14.5), it ends always in Kernel Panic.  Then I tried to install v13.1.5, the last one in Creative Cloud, and it works like a charm even with hundreds of files in 4K.

I tried also to boot in provisory mode, with no kexts and extensions, and  it ended in a kernel panic as always.
I also noticed that there is a "CEPHTMLEngine" not responding in my task manager when I use Premiere. Could it be the cause of my problems?
