I filmed some footage on a BMD URSA Mini PRO in RAW 4:3 codec. When I tried to import it into PPro CC 2017 using media browser, it came up as 'Unsupported file type or damaged file' error. Everything I filmed using the ProRes codec imported fine. I didnt get a chance to film with RAW uncompressed..so not sure if that works or not. Does Premiere Pro support RAW DNG Files?

Adobe supports only fully uncompressed raw not 3:1. You will need a professional program like Resolve for this.

You could make proxies in Resolve, with XML to premiere for editing. export Premiere XML for Resolve and check "Link to camera files" when importing.

I imported 268 BRAW shots captured at 3:1 into an existed project. 262 went great. 6 random shots were unrecognized. Easily viewed in finder, BRAW Player, and Resolve but not Premiere. Explain that. BM has some work to do. I cannot trust it yet.

Game changer.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicursaminipro/blackmagicraw

Up to 12:1 visually lossless compression at 32-bpc. Playback rates over 300fps at 4.6k on an iMac Pro without any fancy eGPU boxen.

Unlike Adobe's dismal support for cinemaDNG, let's hope with a totally license-free open codec and cross-platform SDK this gets into Creative Cloud quickly.

They're either so scared that Davinci Resolve will steal more of their customers, that they'll refuse to support this codec; or will ignore all of it (together with Apple's ProRes RAW lobbying that's utterly financial) and just do the right thing. With Blackmagic Design offering an SDK immediately, Adobe has no excuse...

There's nothing to stop them technically, but corporate politics always calls the shots. Adobe's selling point for Pr was (used to be) that it's happy for you to dump any mix of codecs and formats onto a timeline, which was the big drawback of FCP and Resolve in the Davinci days. Resolve is better at codec support now, but it still barfs at the notion of mixing frame rates or CFR/VFR clips, so there are people "stuck" with Adobe who will expect the footage their crews are sending in will be playable without an hour of Cineform-isation.

I think it's going to hinge on the compression and transcoding ability rather than the range of cameras that can shoot it (BM's cameras are good, but they'll never have the market reach of RED/ARRI/Sony). Archiving a single file is much more attractive than hundreds of thousands of DNGs or TIFFs, even if you ignore the size reduction it's nightmarishly slow to push so many small files around a network. The json sidecar thing is something Adobe should have done with XMP files many years ago.

I’ve used premier for a long time but recently  finished my first BRAW project in Resolve. The codec is sublime, the editing tools in Resolve are not. This codec with Pr and Ae would be game changing.

Save us please Adobe, we give you loads and loads of money, after all!!

Dear Adobe I am so very disappointed and surprised that so many people have requested BRAW support in Adobe Premiere but it's still not there. I have been with you guys since getting my Canopus PC interface which came with Premiere 1.5. I have been an advocate for your software while everybody was swearing by FCP. When Red camera came out you were there on top of your game, when the DSLR tech hit with the Canon 5D Markll you were there while FCP users had to use a 3rd party software to to edit those files. You have been stellar and consistently on the cutting edge building in presets for cameras Arri,Red all the way down to a Go Pro. But now theres BRAW which is a very popular codec right now and i can't believe that now as a user of your products in specific Premiere pro for 16years that this late that I now have to rely on a 3rd party plugin in just like FCP had to do with the DSLR footage at its inception. Why? from what I hear DaVinci is hot on the trail like Samsung is on the iPhone but yet no support for BRAW I hope that it is merely because you're working on it and not brushing BRAW off. I remember when Blackberry wanted to keep their proprietary ways hmm they are no longer the hot ticket. I remember when Blockbuster was par for the course Redbox took em out. Right now Davinci is your predator given how many companies as I mentioned have fell from their pedestal I can't see why you not build BRAW into Adobe Premiere and give people a reason to switch to a  software that handles BRAW and just happens to be free. If you teold me your hands are tied and it's politics I could live with that. I enjoy your products but why after all these years  pull a Canon, Blackberry, Blockbuster, FCP move and ignore the market. Lets have some BRAW support please

Of course, mainly Adobe needs to get over its paranoia and simply provide support to BRAW (like it does to other camera manufacturers like Sony who throw money at them, like the Venice getting V3 codec support pretty much instantly last week).

But don't forget that RAW import is sort of always like a plug-in anyway.  Think of Adobe Bridge/Lightroom/Photoshop and how modules have always performed the import.  BRAW Studio (currently for Windows only, which is the best OS platform for serious editing anyway) actually works impressively well in their newest version, and feels essentially transparent as a user experience.  Give it a try, until Adobe gets over itself.

To keep holding us over (though Adobe needs to step up), Autokroma's BRAW Studio really does work; and I've created an hour-long video tutorial that goes in-depth showing how:

http://www.focuspulling.com/braw

One of my conclusions is that whenever Adobe finally comes around, it probably won't function much differently than this third-party plug-in (because RAW files still require a step of configuration at the clip level anyway).

This was a solution from Blackmagic Design - NOT Adobe. Adobe still doesn't support Blackmagic RAW format natively, and it STILL can't be dynamically linked and used in AFTER EFFECTS. The reason I stay with Adobe is AFTER EFFECTS. How is Blackmagic Design's band-aid a solution a proper answer for Adobe??

Very interesting, first I'm hearing of this.

Fully six years after BMD released the Pocket Cinema Camera, Adobe software still doesn't properly support the camera's CinemaDNG, which is Adobe's own format!

CinemaDNG – Adobe video & audio apps

My guess is you'll have to switch NLE's if you shoot with BRAW.

It isn't a problem of lack of interest. They only have so many bodies working on things. I would like to see upper management give a wee bit more budget for staffing.

Adobe lives by metrics. So posting about such things on the bug/features report services sends it right to the collated list for upper managers. Please do so.

It's not funny. On September 14, BlackmagicDesign published a .braw format. September 21, they posted the SDK. On November 14, they posted updates and made braw player.

  • Scratch Play Pro since September 16 support .braw
  • On October 19, Lightworks began supporting codec.
  • Even for Nuke there is a plugin for reading files.

It has been 76 days since the SDK open access release.

What did Adobe do? Nothing!

And you know, work in a davinchi is not so bad. Especially if you don’t like constant roundtrips.

Hi there, AndreySNK!

This is a really common request and we understand the importance of supporting BRAW footage! I'm not sure about the inner workings of the engineering team and I don't know exactly what they're working on at the moment, but I know that they check this page below to see what users want/need! You can see from the link that BRAW support is at the top of the list, which leads me to believe that they'll get to it as soon as they can.

Premiere Pro: Hot (3464 ideas) – Adobe video & audio apps

Please look through all the suggestions and vote for which ones would best benefit you!

It took Adobe a few releases to support the Canon Light raw codec as well, which was first introduced with the release of their C200.

Tech sometimes takes time and you cannot fault Adobe because it probably is the most codec agnostic piece of software in the entire industry!

Meanwhile, please figure out a way to use an intermediate codec. I'm positive that some future release soon will support this!

Half a year has passed. And nothing new. It is very strange. It seems easier to leave Premiere and leave to work at Davinci.

If you go that way, I recommend using the following approach.

"Forget" what you know about editing and start "fresh" with the new software.

DaVinci Resolve 16 – Training | Blackmagic Design

In the end, it'll be less frustrating than constantly trying to compare the two.

We’re delighted to let you know that high-performance support for Blackmagic RAW is now available in Premiere Pro.

The new plugin is available with Blackmagic RAW 1.5.

Download the plugin here: Blackmagic RAW 1.5

I'm aware that everyone's asking for this, but if this is some "anti-Blackmagic" stunt to try to keep people using premiere instead of DaVinci, it's going to backfire.

This should've been talked out before release or at the very least DURING the release process.

If support isn't added soon, you will most definitely start losing Blackmagic camera owners to the DaVinci editing workflow if this isn't a thing in the near future. I already know some people who have switched, and from what I've heard, DaVinci has actually created quite the editing software in addition to an obviously badass color program.

Food for thought.

This is primarily a user to user forum.

You wanna communicate to the engineers, post in the UserVoice system. I'm on my phone or I'd add the link but you can see it on the Overview page of this forum.

I know there are lots of people who agree with you -- it's important to let Adobe product managers know. If everyone crushes this form with requests for BRAW, it will get Adobe's attention:

Feature Request/Bug Report Form

Since this is a community forum, and the wish form goes directly to Adobe, I highly recommend going there!

Thanks dudes!

My primary intent was to see, as Buck pointed out, if we can get some steam behind this, it's been wayyyyy too long with no real answer. At least that I've seen. I'm sure Adobe's heard enough about this already, but I'd be happy to post the same thing in the UserVoice system.

We no longer use wishform for feature requests, we use User Voice. The specific link for adding BMD RAW Support is here: Support Blackmagic RAW – Adobe video & audio apps

Thanks,
