Setting different slide durations in simple animations

I am making basic animations with text overlays using stills (PNGs or photos) and want some slides on longer than others, but can't set exactly the time I want.  PP sometimes adds a bit here and there. I tried to set 2 sec and PP made it 2.3 or similar. Am I using the wrong tool for this process?

When you're extending a clip (or shortening) with Selection tool, you will see a tooltip next to your cursor showing you the exact duration of the clip.

Alternatively, use the position of the playhead and then when you extend the clip hold shift key down and the clip will snap to the playhead automatically.
