This is the first time I've tried this sofware, and I'm overwhelmed.
What I want to do is very simple:
Input: One .mp4 video file.
Output: Many .mp4 video files, each of them corresponding to ONE detected scene in the original file, and numbered so I can see which file corresponds to which scene (sequential scene number or time code).
Is this doable?

Hit F1 and type in: Scene Edit Detection.
(right click on clip in timeline)

I've managed to create the scenes (even though I'm not sure which of the three options (cut, bin of subclips or clip marker I need). What I don't get is the "export to many video files on my hard disk" part.

Trying out all settings makes you understand how it works.
As for output: select all clips in project window and Export Media.

I see the cuts, and I did "export media", but I got just one file containing everything. The only change was that my 161MB .mp4 file somehow got convereted to a 1,9 GB .mpeg file 😞

Did you select all clips in the Project window first?

Thank you SO much!

Make sure the Work Area Bar is only over the part you want to export. Then export each scene one at a time or send them all to the Adobe Media Encoder queue and then export.
