Time lapse import issues

I have some time lapse images saved as JPG that I'm trying to turn into a video. Each time I try to import the images into Premiere, the thumbnail in the media browser is of the first image, but when I drop it into the timeline or view it in any other way, every frame is black. I've tried renaming the files to just numbers and tried moving the images to my nvme drive from slower storage thinking that could be the issue, but no change.
