Timeline only shows yellow

when I put a clip on my time line the performance indicator bar ia automatically yellow.  The clip has no effects.  When I put effects on a clip te line is suppose to turn red, but iit stays yellow.  When I try to render the clips after rendering they bar stay's yerllow an dthe footage remains choppy.
