I have version 14.4.0 that I have not updated.  Can I update to 14.7 without having updated from 14.4.0 previously?

yes, but make sure that you do not delete the earlier version as there can be is when you update.  You might also do some digging here for best practices when updating.  If I remember correctly, you should reset preferences and caches, but to be sure, search this forum, or perhaps someone else will pipe up.
