What is this selection thing?

This grayed out area on my timeline has appeared and I dont know what it is. When I export my projects now I have to make sure this thing is exactly the right lengths or I end up with an elxtra long video ro with stuff cut out. I dont remember this being there before. See how the time ruler on top is gray I want to get rid of it.

that area is defined by your in and out.  You can clear the in and out by control clicking on the program monitor and choosing clear in and out (there's also a shortcut key combo to do this).  you can also choose to export from in to out or entire sequence in the export dialog right below the preview area.
