Zoom video - cropping multiple people

Somewhat related to an earlier question I asked ( https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/two-clips-side-by-side/td-p/11299017 ), I need to edit many Zoom-recorded videos to only show a couple of the people who were speaking. The files I have were recorded in gallery view, so I have a brady-bunch and need to only select a few people in the final productions.

Do I make copies of the video portions -- and just place those on the tracks above the original? And then crop out the people I want to have in the final video? Adjust their placement on the screen/timeline? How do I make sure that the audio stays connected and on track if I separate out several video "layers" to get each person in the final production and remove other people?

Thanks for any guidance.
