Author > Import > HTML Topic - is there a limit on the number of files that can be imported?

I have an existing project which already includes a lot of content. And I should add that the project is based on content upgraded from the old Robohelp 2017 and the continuously worked on using Robohelp 2022.

So I need to import e.g. 524 HTML topics. These HTML topics are pretty simple, just text with no images and I have verified that the included CSS URL is valid i.e. the CSS files are already present in the project.

I am running the latest version, I updated today, and I experienced the same with the previous version.
I run the HTML import process and it will import what seems like a maximum of 255 topics. I get an Application error prompt, which I dismiss and then I see a HTML import prompt listing the title of the last topic currently being imported, so the file number 255,  and that HTML import prompt doesn't seem to go away until I dismiss it.

And it seems to that get all 524 topics imported I have to try and import them in batches.

Note:
Before anyone asks, yes I have tried creating a new empty project, added my CSS files and tried HTML import there and the 524 imported just fine. And then as a workaround I copy the already imported HTML files manually into the folder of the main project, they appear and all seems ok.

So overall I've just been wondering what it is about the existing project that causes the import to fail?

I'm not overly surprised that importing that number in one batch causes RoboHelp to choke. There is some processing of the files going on even though they are simple. You ask what it is about your project but I don't think that's it as you have tried with a new project.

Have you tried with batches of 100/200? Perhaps also close and reopen RoboHelp after each batch if the smaller number causes issues.

Hi Peter, yes I have tried importing smaller batches, so < 255 files and it works okay. It just takes longer of course and checking to make sure that I haven't missed any content 🙂 If I don't import in smaller batches I will use the workaround of importing the files into an empty project and then copy over from there.

Sorry, I misread your original post saying they do import into a new project. That negates the reason being the processing causing things to choke.

Maybe take it up with Adobe Support? See https://helpx.adobe.com/contact/enterprise-support.other.html#robohelp for your Adobe Support options. The email link tcssup@adobe.com is recommended as it reaches a team dedicated to Technical Communication Suite products including RoboHelp.

No worries. I wanted to check every option before posting here as I figured someone would first ask had I already tried importing into an empty project. I reckon it's just the size of the existing content that's the issue, and to start with it was imported from the previous version etc. So I will just import in batches or use another empty project. I could ask support, in fact I probably should but it's not worth my time right now to be honest...

After you import into the empty project and then copy the files into your main project, I assume you are deleting the imported topics to keep the project empty.

It occurred to me it might be worth leaving them so that the size of that project builds up. At a certain point, does it stop importing without issue? Just a little experiment to see if it explains the problem with the real project.

Hi Peter, yes good point. I later discovered that when using an empty project that the the same error started to occur, so for example I would have 500 HTML topics to import and it would import a maximum of 255.

The solution was to just forget about using an empty project and continue importing into the main actual project in batches of e.g. 100 HTML topics. I still receive the request to restart the application and the importing prompt still shows in the lower right corner indicating that the last topic in the batch I just imported is still being imported allthough it is already present. I just ignore the prompts and when I'm done check that the HTML file count is correct either in the content folder or in a table of contents once I have added the content there. And if I just import in batches like this and ignore the warnings all seems to work okay so far.
