Call Me Frustrated: Paragraph Formatting in RoboHelp 2020

I recently upgraded from RH 2015 to RH 2020 and was really taken aback by the UI changes. While I'm adjusting to some of it, I'm bewildered by other things. For example, I cannot find a way to simply format a paragraph inline. Did the "Paragraph" dialog box just go away, or am I missing something? It appears that the only way to format paragraphs is via the Properties panel, which is clunky and missing options (such as setting values for numbered lists or changing paragraph spacing).

Does RH 2020 expect me to create individual styles for every kind of paragraph I need? I tried to add a new style to the style sheet but it doesn't even appear in the Styles list (in any category).

Help!!!

Robohelp 2020 has moved away from Miicrosoft Word type styles to CSS based styles.

As well as reading the information Peter suggested, if you're not familiar with CSS I recommend working through the W3 Schools CSS tutorial, as I think you'll find everything makes more sense with that background.

Some quick pointers in the meantime.

It's not as bad as it may seem at first but there is a learning curve.

It's late here so I'll reply properly in the morning. Meantime take a look at the About RoboHelp sample project or the RoboHelp Tour on my site. Lots of explanations there.

Some quick pointers in the meantime.

The Properties > Styles tab lists all the styles available for that topic. 'p' is equivalent to 'Normal'. If you have formatting you want to apply regularly, I recommend creating a new style here, so you can quickly change it everywhere when necessary. When you create the style you need to select the correct HTML tag, then enter the style name in the Class field. So for example, maybe you want to make a paragraph red, but otherwise the same as any other paragraph. In this case, select 'p' in the Tag list, and type a name for the style in the Class field. (Ignore Pseudo Class in nearly every case. 🙂 )

The Properties > General tab lets you format a single paragraph or text selection using inline formatting. Do this if it's a one off change that you don't want to repeat regularly.

Pay attention to the Type listed at the top of the panel as that will tell you what you are applying the formatting to. The options available will differ depending on what HTML element you selected. For example, if you clicked inside a span tag (for example some bold text) then you won't get alignment options such as line height or indent, as the span tag can't accept those values. Similarly, if you're inside a paragraph, you can't apply numbering as only list items can have numbering (in this case, you'd click on the number icon in the toolbar to change the paragraph to a numbered list).

The element structure bar at the top of each topic can come in handy if you can't seem to access the fomatting settings that you're after. It shows you the order of elements for where your cursor currently is. You can then click on one of the parent elements to select it, and access the inline formatting options. For example, in this screenshot my cursor is inside some bold text. The structure bar shows that the cursor is inside a span which is inside a p tag inside the topic body tag. Mostly you shouldn't need to use it, but it can be helpful in some situations.

Hopefully this at least gets you started. (And don't forget the css tutorial 🙂  )

You may want to invest in a copy of Kevin Siegel's RH book - https://www.iconlogic.com/skills-drills-workbooks/adobe/robohelp-workbooks/adobe-robohelp-2019-essen... - I know he's working up a RH2020 version too.
