Deal accentuated vowels in files names

New Here ,
Oct 11, 2007 Oct 11, 2007
Hello,

I need some help to better deal the accentuated vowels such as "é", "è", "à", "ç", "ù" (lowercase or uppercase) in file names.
I know files names do not support accentuated letters but I would like that such vowels be converted in non-accentuated vowels (while keeping uppercases and lowercases). I really need it because it will much clearer, more intuitive and understandable for teams in my firm to deal with files names where "é" are transformed in "e" and not in "_"

for example, currently the topic title "2.1.2.1 Éléments de navigation vers des vues de même type"
is converted in the file name "2_1_2_1_l_ments_de_navigation_vers_des_vues_de_m_me_type.htm"
and I would like "2_1_2_1_Elements_de_navigation_vers_des_vues_de_meme_type.htm"

Thanks for you help

New Topic window (new topic): After you type the Topic Title entry, click your cursor in the File Name field and change the underscores to the characters you want.

Topic Properties window (existing topic): Click your cursor in the File Name field and change the underscores to the characters you want.

Good luck,
Leon

thanks Leon but I was not clear enough : my problem is that i want to find a way to change the automatic way RH transforms accentuated vowels in topic titles to underscores in file names.
Indeed, I need to import in RH a big Word file (1500p) that will be converted in more that 500 topic files, so i really do not want to do manually the conversion of inadequate underscore in letters...
Do you think it is possible to change that automatic transmutation ?

Thanks in advance

Sam

Hi Sam. I've tried converting a word file with accentuated vowels into every concievable format (.HTM, .PDF, etc.) that can be imported and none of them bring in the accentuated vowels. I think you are going to be stuck with having to manually change the 500 odd topics.

I just tried it out of curiosity. I don't normally import word files for my projects, but it's late Friday...

I created a new test.doc, pasted in the example you gave and formatted as h1, plus some random test text. Imported into RH6 and got the accents in my file names, i.e. 2_1_2_1_Éléments_de_navigation_vers_des_vues_de_même_type.htm.

The language of the project is English (xpj file says 1033, if anyone understands that). PC and Word are both set to English (AU). In case any of that makes a difference.
Using RoboHelp HTML 6 and Word 2003.

Umm! I suspect that Sam may not have the PC set to English though. That maybe the key difference. Sam is your RH project set to English or Francais?

of course, everything (Windows XP SP2, Word 2002 and RH6) set in English
but I have also tested every imaginable combinations between french and english for Word and RH but none of them is working, and worse, randomly, with no sensible explanation, topic titles do not accept accentuated vowels.....
do you have any clues to get me out of the denser and denser accentuated mist ?

Thanks
Sam

If all else fails, you could handle the situation using a series of search/replace actions. (Do some renaming in a copy of the Word document, import from that copy, and then fix the results using another search/replace.)

It would be quite a bit of work, and you'd probably have to experiment a bit, but it could be done, I think. You could manage it using the Multi-file Find and Replace Tool (or a third party tool like BK Replace 'Em), plus a file renaming tool like BK Renamer.

Of course, if you can get RH to import the names properly to begin with, that would be much better!

Just a thought. If the problem is random, is your project on anetwork drive? If so, move it to a local drive and see if the problem still occurs. It may also be worth creating a new project and create a few topics in it to see if the problems is project specific. Post back with the results.
