duplicate topic for book

When I generate my PDF using the "Printed Documentation" layout, everywhere I have a book icon in my TOC I get a duplicate topic in the chapter layout. How do I prevent these duplicates?

By not telling RH to do that! :-)

You have books that are set up to display topics when clicked on the online help.

In the printed help, the topic is included because of that. You are then including the topic in the print layout.

Leave the book in and remove the topic below in the print layout. Then you should just get the topic once.

I've tried the steps you outline (keeping the book but removing the topic). Unfortunately the links no longer work when the topic is removed.

From what you described, your TOC had a book with a link to a topic and the topic was shown again under the book. That means the TOC has two ways of showing that topic in the online help. If your printed document is based on that TOC,  the wizard will generate the topic twice.

Removing the topic from the TOC or removing the link in the book, only affects the TOC. The topic remains in the project. What links are broken?

I am authoring my dita files in oxygen. I import my ditamap into RoboHelp. I open the Printed Documentation layout, I remove the duplicate topic under the book icon. When I check the resulting Word file, the information that was in the topic is gone and the links that reference the topic are not created.

I appreciate your help.

regards,

Cathy

Let's go through an example.

Your project has Topics 1, 2 and 3.

Your build does not use any conditional build tags so in printed documentation if your layout includes all three topics, all three will be there. If you include a topic many times, it will be there for each inclusion. Take one out, only that one goes.

You say the information that was in the topic has gone which sounds like the topic is there but blank. Do you mean the topic has gone? Do you mean there is no instance of that topic, not one?

Some screen shots might help. Use the camera icon about, not the Attach Files link below.
