Fatal Error: Unexpected error from Microsoft HTML compiler.

Hi,

I reopened an old project which I wanted to update, and after I finished all the work and wanted to create a chm file, I got this error message.

When I tried to rerun it, it is telling me that the file cannot be created because it is already opened by another program.

I have administrative rights on this machine, I am using RoboHelp 7.0.2. The RoboHelp is running in a virtual machine.

It is my first time I see this error, and it is happening on other machines too. I wonder if perhaps it is related to any Microsoft or Adobe updates.

The projects use to work fine till now, so I cannot see why suddenly they do not work anymore.

I copied the project on another machine and managed to compile it w/o any problems. No error messages.

On the same machine where I have this error message, I was able to compile other projects to chm without any problems, so I am not sure what is the cause of this issue, the RH7 or the project.

I checked some old posts regarding this issue and followed some advices, however all to no avail.

Thank you,

Bogdan Marin

In the meantime I found out the problem.

It was one of the html files that was not able to compile in similar projects (I have several projects with small differences which I maintain). I created an empty topic, copied and pasted the text from the problematic topic, formated it and deleted the problematic file. I restored the TOC and Index to the new html file, and compiled the project clean.

Thank you,

Bogdan Marin

I am getting the same error. How can I tell which of the HTML files is problematic? The only item in the Output View that I can't account for (I am not an expert by any means, though), is the "hhc" file showing just before the error message. Is it supposed to appear there? Or, is it there because it is corrupted? And, if so, is there a remedy?

Hi,

This is a very old issue, and the only solution that I remember finding about that was the length of some of the topics, i.e. htm files.

I shortened them and the problem did not appear anymore.

Just look for very long file names in the project manager and change it there. Eventually you might want to check the name of the project not to have any special characters or spaces. RH7 allows those characters, however I found out at the time of the compilation they might cause compilation errors.
