how do i adjust the space between numbers and text in a numbered list?

There is too large a gap between the numbers and the text in my numbered lists; I can't find anywhere on the .css file to set this value. Can this be done?

thanks, but I tried a couple of the suggestions there and got a hanging indent in my text.
