Hi,
I'm using RH 10 with linked FM 11 files to create a WebHelp project and this is what happens when I do an update or force update of a linked file in the RH project:
Can someone please advise how to update a linked file without losing TOC entries or Map IDs?
Thanks a bunch!
Gabe

2 questions - where's your ToC coming from? FM or RH? and how are you doing your Map IDs? Are they set in FM as marker text or are you assigning them in RH?

HI Gabe,
You will want to link the TOC from FM in your conversion settings, and set the map id's via TopicAlias markers in FM.

Hi Matt,
Can you point me to the dialog for linking the TOC in my conversion settings? Is it Project Settings > Edit conversion settings for FM > ?
I'll research TopicAlias markers in FM...
Jeff, I was setting up both the TOC and Map IDs in RH - sounds like I need to set it up to come from FM.
Thanks!
Gabe

Right-click on your FM book file in RH and IIRC, it's under Properties

Thanks. I'm trying the converted TOC thing right now.
Quick question about TopicAlias markers - once I add them to my FM source, do I have to re-import the FM books/files into my RH project or can I add them via the update function?

Just update as with any other change in content. Before going crazy with the markers, you only need to mark things that will *not* be split into their own topics. Those can be mapped via the topic title, and won't need a TopicAlias marker.

OK, thanks. So back to the TOC issue - I just created a TOC as you advised (selecting Convert FM TOC) and then I tried the same scenario - I upated some text in the source FM file, and then updated the linked file in RH and looked at the new TOC and the same thing happens - the topic that contained the change is missing from the TOC. What am I missing?
Thanks again,
Gabe

did you set your SSL to use the FM TOC? Are you viewing the FM TOC in RH?
Sorry, but gotta "pay the bills" so I need to sign off for a while

I'm afraid I don't know the SSL setting you're referring to. All I've done is create the TOC using the "convert Frame TOC" feature and then set that new TOC as the default.
(Yes, I'm viewing the FM TOC in RH)
Thanks for your help today!

So I've got the map ID thing figured out but I'd still very much like to figure out how to keep my TOC in tact following an update. I started down the path of using the defualt TOC from Frame but realized that won't work for me because my project consists of two books which are merged in the TOC. Does this mean I'm stuck having to reinsert the TOC page every time I update a topic from a linked FM file?
Thanks,
Gabe

Describe how you're "merging two books in the TOC"? Are you talking about FM .book files or the little book icons in the RH ToC? If your source material is multiple FM books, you can always construct a "book of books" structure to hold your content and create ToCs and IXs in FM that get pulled into RH. That's the method I use for one of my projects - it consists of a master book that acts as a shell for a What's New .fm doc, an index, a ToC and about 60 sub-books.

My project links to two separate FM .book files. Using the default TOC from Frame results in two separate TOCs - one for each book. I want one TOC that includes both books. Are you saying that in FM, you have one master book which includes files for multiple books and generates one TOC for all of them?

yes, exactly - about 60-odd sub-books and around 290 .fm files. Whenever the content changes in FM, I just update the master book of books, save it, close it and then bring it into RH.

OK, got it. However, I'm still seeing the same problem from the RH TOCs that are generated automatically from the FM book, that is the topic still disappears when I update the linked file. Do you know if there's a setting I need to tweak?
BTW, the topic only disappears from the TOC if I update a single linked .fm file in the RH project - if I update the whole project, the TOC topic stays in tact. Perhaps this is what I need to do from now on - but it's more time consuming...
Thanks,
Gabe

Presuming you've done an Update Book operation in FM first, are you right-clicking and doing a Force Update All in RH? That should pull it all in again from FM.

Everything works fine with the "Force Update All." I was hoping I could update individual files at a time but I guess that's what causes the issue. Now I know. Thanks for your help!

If a first version of the content is already in RH, I think using "Update" or "Force Update" will do just that one.
