I am using RoboHelp 2020.6.76.

I can see how to change the background color of many elements, but I would like to change the background color of the entire topic page, just like the "Dark" skin does. How do I do that?

Frameless would be the way I'd head, as that seems to be where Adobe is making most of their changes.

I'd recommend using the editor to modify the skin settings that are available, then add a custom css to the User Assets section of the skin for anything that's not available in the editor. Otherwise I think you risk breaking the skin file.

For the topic background, perhaps look in the skin editor at Topic Page > Center Panel > container and topic-box. (The wording might be slightly different

We are still in the beginning stages of switching over from our previous authoring tool and are trying to pin down some things before we start adding content. So we have not decided which skin to start with and modify, as this is part of the decision. We are trying to figure out which elements are difficult to change later and which ones are simple. We thought that the background would be a simple change using the skin editor but could not find a way to do it. The Frameless Orange is probably the one we will start with and then modify it.

After doing some searching, we found three places in the Dark skin which seem to be storing the background colors, all in the file "frameless.skn":

  • <left-panel-bg-color>
  • <theme-bg-color>
  • <idx-glo-search-bg-color>  (not sure what this does)

But we weren't sure if there was more to it than that.

I am also trying to get a feel for how hard it is to customize the skin and how much freedome we have. Also, if the general proceedure is going to be to use the skin editor, or will it require editing the source files directly. Since the documentation is still incomplete (although it is getting better), the only way to know is to start trying things.

If you mean changing everything that's white, then there'll be a few places. For example Body, Header, Left Panel, etc. The highlight should help you determine what will change (make sure the Toggle Highlight button is selected at the top of the application)

Regarding the custom css I mentioned, you'd determine the correct styles to adjust using the Developer Tools in your browser.

For the background of the topics rather than some part of the skin, try the body tag of the topic's css.
