How to maintain updates with translations? (XLIFF)

Hello folks,

I have a question about XLIFFs.

Let's say:

1. You import translated XLIFFs

2. You make changes to the source material

3. You export new XLIFFs for your translators

The new XLIFFs won't have the old translations. This means the translators have to start from scratch.

So how are you supposed to work with this system and maintain updates in translations?

Thanks,

Gurpreet

I am not at a RoboHelp machine but the process makes what needs translating clear. See The RoboHelp Tour on my site and search for translations.

Thanks. I read through your page but it did not answer my question.

So a key detail: we're not looking to make XLIFFs for translation vendors. Instead we want the XLIFFs to be public and allow anyone from our community to edit them to improve translations.

The problem is that once I export an XLIFF, it doesn't include translations from the previous XLIFF, so the old translation work is effectively wiped. For every page that is changed in the source material, translations have to be performed again.

Is this correct? How do people usually work around this?

I've never heard of anyone using XLIFF for that purpose - normally you'd expect feedback on the "finished" translation back in your project's output - not at the intermediate step of getting content translated.

Yeah, the more I look into this, XLIFF does not seem fit for community translations. We are now looking at other solutions.

Thank you for your time!
