map ids

Hi again,

We using map IDs for a WebHelp project (built with RH5, RoboHelp HTML), but the development team has a concern about map ID numbers being overwritten if a topic is removed, or the ID is removed using the "remove unused map IDs". They'e REALLY concerned about, say, if we have 300 topics, number 237 is removed. Then we rebuild the help and suddenly, number 238 becomes 237 and all the remaining topics get "bumped" back by one.

How do I prevent this from happening? Do I just never use the "remove unused map ID" function?

Thanks,
Jim

Well, I have a project that is supported by two map ID files, with several hundred map IDs in both, and gaps in numbering in both. The problem you are concerned about has NEVER happened to me. Ever. In my experience, it is a non-issue.

Map IDs do not jump ship.

Now of course, if someone else has seen this happen, I would love to hear about it, and would reconsider some of my strategies.

One word......COMMUNICATION. If you and your developers talk to each other about changes to the mapids then as lmarden says it is a non-issue. If you delete a topic that has a mapid assigned to it, they need to know.
