Missing or Corrupted Files

I am excerpting portions of Word 2002 SP3 files, converting them to HTML using Word and then assembling and compiling them in RoboHELP 9.2. At present I have two (there are many, many more to go) help systems consisting, 1. of 48 doc files converted to HTML and, 2. 137 doc files converted to HTML.

When I open the chm file for the smaller help system, I get a TOC and a functional file for all but about three of the files. When I check the TOC against the list of files, I discover that some are missing. When I attempt to open the problem files that are in the compile, I get a debug dialog box. Analysis of these files that they have tables that continue across pages or border frames around text. I read somewhere that long tables shold be treated as images, so I converted each page to a jpeg file and recompiled. This remedy does not seem to work. I removed the borders and shaded the background behind the text that was originally framed by a border. This remedy does not seem to work either. The files continaing these feaures remain among the missing or the corrupted.

When I compile the larger help system, I do not get a TOC and the files containing long tables or text with framed borders present the same problems described above.

Does anyone have any ideas about solutions to these problems?

Nothing good has ever come from having MS Word convert its own .doc files to HTML.

You might try, as a test, creating a fresh RH HTML project and importing a good amount of the "problem" Word docs. Come back with results.

Good luck,

Welcome to the forum.

Importing Word documents into RH HTML is the cause of many problems and probably a some nervous breakdowns. Where that fails, using a version of Word later than the version of RH was designed for is a useful additional ingredient to ensure either one of those options, or both if you get lucky!

Long tables have to be seriously long to be an issue in my experience. I have some that span three or four printed pages and they give me no trouble.

Having indicated that importing a document from a later version of Word could be the culprit, it doesn't mean it definitely is.

I suggest you take a look at the topic on my site about Importing Word documents and see if that helps. Things have improved a lot in later versions but that is not to say an upgrade will fix the problem, just that it has a fair chance.

I could import on of your documents and generate a printed document for you. That would tell you what happened with a straight import into RH6 with none of the tuning I cover on my site.
