Missing Topics in TOC

Guest
May 01, 2008 May 01, 2008
When I generate webhelp the TOC comes out fine. When I generate either a word or .pdf file the first two topics/books are missing. They are listed in the Chapter Layout. The headings are the same as the other topics that are printing in the TOC. Any suggestions?

Anything in the Output view?

Take a look at Print Issues on my site.

Everything looks fine in the output view. The items below are copied from the output view. They don't show up in the TOC though. I reviewed your print issues and didn't find anything that would help. I made sure there is only one style sheet (the default.css) in the project.

Building 'Deployable Installation Guide'...
Building '1.0 Scope'...
Processing '1.1 DIG Document Purpose'...

Any suggestions?

They are not in the TOC but are they in the body of the document?

When you say they are in the chapter layout, you mean the second page of the wizard?

Have you checked the missing topics for build tags?

Yes, they are not in the TOC but they are in the body of the document.

When I say chapter layout, I mean the second page of the wizard.

Where would I find the build tags? I checked the HTML to see if the headers were correct. The HTML looked the same fall the topics.

I applied a conditional build tag to the sections that weren't showing up in the TOC. It still didn't work. Are there build tags other than the conditional ones?

If it was build tags, the topics would not be in the body.

Have you tried clicking to the right of the TOC and selecting Update field?

I have tried right-clicking on the TOC and updating field - entire table. It still doesn't work. They only way I can get the TOC to show up properly is to regenerate the TOC in word.

This is really frustrating!

Just noodling here a little . . .

1. Which heading style(s) are you using for topic titles? Are they consistently applied for all topics, looking at the html view? Are there any stray spaces or html code immediately before the <begin heading> tags?

2. Are you generating print doc with the project's style mapping dot, or some other?

3. Did you select "Maintain HTML heading levels"?

In points 2 and 3, I don't know whether these settings (or which option) may be causing the problem; just suggesting that you change one at a time to test print output.

All build tags are conditional. The thing that needed to be checked was that these topics did NOT have any tags applied but that was before you told me the topics were appearing in the document, just not in the TOC. Remove them, you don't need them.

Are you using RH for Word or RH HTML?

If the former, is the style of the heading of the missing topics definitely the same as the others?

If the latter, same question but also check the HTML code for differences.

In that second Printed Doc layout window, try this:

1. Click the left stacked arrows button (Remove All).
2. Check the Show all topics box.
3. Click the right stacked arrows button (Add All).
4. Generate the Printed Doc layout.

Good luck,
Leon

Peter:

I removed all the build tags. I am using RH_HTML (7). I checked the HTML code for differences in the headers, they are exactly the same.

Leon: I tried the following and it didn't work either.

In that second Printed Doc layout window, try this:

1. Click the left stacked arrows button (Remove All).
2. Check the Show all topics box.
3. Click the right stacked arrows button (Add All).
4. Generate the Printed Doc layout.

For anyone following this thread, it seems to have gone dead.

Pittwoman emailed me the project and the first topic in the body of the document was in the TOC. I asked Pittwoman to clarify the problem but I have not had any reply. I also asked the RH version and Word version but no reply to that either.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I signed out Friday afternoon here in the East Coast of the US and just now got back online. The TOC you sent me was how it is supposed to look.
