Navigation Pane Items Do Not Open Automatically

New Here ,

ROBOHELP v. 7

Primary output in my project is FLASHHelp.
The navigation pane does not open automatically as I click through pages in my project. This is a problem.

I changed the primary layout to WEBHELP, and re-compiled my project.
Now, as I click through my help pages, the Navigation pane opens to reveal the exact page I'm viewing (as expected).

How can I make this work in FlashHelp?

Welcome to the forums. Can you clarify the symptoms a bit more? When you open the help system, are you getting any nav pane at all, blank or otherwise? Or do you just get the HTML topic with no nav pane or toolbar?

Does this happen on your hard drive only, on the server only, or both places?

Thanks,

Ben

For the moment, everything is local on my PC.

I clicked "View Primary Layout" and the navigation pane in my FlashHelp project DOES open as I would expect.

I re-compiled my FlashHelp project and the navigation pane does not open as I bounce from page to page (Of course, I could click on the navigation pane and it does open, but that's not the issue.)

So, it seems the "View Primary Layout" gives me the result I expect, but after I compile, the resulting file does not.

Note, that when I refer to the Navigation pane, I'm really referring to the TOC itself.

I expect the TOC to open and highlight the page that I'm currently on. In FlashHelp it isn't happening, but when I click "View Primary Layout" the toc responds as I would expect.

I apologize if I'm being slow, but I still don't understand what the problem is. If you're "bouncing from page to page," are you using links in the topics themselves? Or are you opening topics from Windows Explorer?

If you're opening topics directly from Windows Explorer, the TOC isn't going to open. If you've enabled "Show Navigation Pane Link in Topics" in the SSL generation dialog, you should see a "Show" link at the top of the topic, which opens the toolbar and TOC.

To get the system to open with the TOC, you'd have to open your start page, which is defined in the first page of the SSL dialog.

Sorry about the confusion. Here's the problem:

Whatever page I'm viewing, I expect the TOC to expand and the page I'm on should be highlighted in the TOC. It works fine in WEBHELP, but not in FLASHHELP.

1. I generate my primary layout (FlashHELP). I want to see the TOC in the navigation pane. The TOC is there and it can be seen and accessed. I can click on any entry in the TOC and I'm brought to the correct page.

2. On my DEFAULT TOPIC page are links to other pages in the project, just like the TOC. When I click on any link on my DEFAULT TOPIC page, the correct page opens as expected, but the TOC does NOT expand and highlight the page I'm on.

If I click on a breadcrumb to take me to another page, the TOC still does not expand and highlight the page I'm currently on. That's the problem.

Again, it works fine in Webhelp, not FLASHhelp.

Hi Jeff

When you generate FlashHelp, look at the second page of the wizard. Is the option to synchronize table of contents enabled?

Cheers... Rick

It sounds like it's an issue with the TOC synching automatically. In your SSL dialog, is the auto-sync TOC option enabled? One way to verify this in your output is if you have a Sync button (usually a circular arrow) above the TOC. This button shows up only if the TOC isn't set to sync automatically.

The synchronize TOC option is enabled (set to Automatically, but I tried Manually too). I generated my primary layout, same problem. The TOC does not expand (synch up) and it does not highlight the page I'm currently viewing.

If I click VIEW PRIMARY LAYOUT, the TOC synchs up fine and works as expected.

It just doesn't work after I generate the primary layout.

Any other suggestions? Thank you!

Hey Jeff

What version of the Flash Player are you using? I ask because we are seeing some oddness over in the Captivate world with the latest and greatest player.

I'm wondering if this is something else we will see.

Cheers... Rick
