Print Doc FUBARED XPJ

Guest

Just upgraded to RH9.  Created xpj and single source was webhelp.  After several successful compiles I attempted to generate a word doc of one topic for review.  Message appeared that macros were disabled and a box informed to reinstall printed documentation (I assume that is possible without reinstalling RH completely).  I figured out how to enable macros in Word and succesfully generated the doc.  When I returned to the XPJ it was basically destroyed. I did not close it or save it, only ran the printed doc from single source.   Only 3 of the original 15 topics were accessible.  All others had a red X.  The ones that remained had lost all graphics and formatting.  I have never had anything like this happen before.  Anyone experience this or have any ideas?

The project is still in it's early stages so recreating it is not a major issue, but this frightens me going forward.

Also, I can't seem to get HELP to work.  It gives me

Hi,

First off, did you install the 9.0.1 patch? This patch fixed a bug that let RoboHelp lose track of topics. If you don't have it installed, install the patch before doing anything else.

Next, make a backup of the project. Thrash the CPD and reopen the project. If the topics are still missing, you will need to restore the missing topics. If you haven't made any changes to your project, just take the project from the old RH version and upgrade that again. (Retain the back up of the old RH version.) Otherwise, make sure the topics are indeed available in the directory they should be located. If the topics are there already, remove the topics in RoboHelp and import the topics back in the project. Since you have only 15 topics, this shouldn't be much work.

When your project is restores, try to create printed documentation again. If it still doesn't work, check whether you can create printed documentation for any of the example projects.

Greet,

Willam

"This patch fixed a bug that let RoboHelp lose track of topics".  Did it lose track of images as well and under what conditions did this losing of stuff occur?  I can't believe they would release a ver. that did this.  That is a pretty big bug for an app that is useless without topics and images IMHO.

I will get the patch but this XPJ has no prior version and it was originally created in RH 9.0.  When I looked in the project directory, none of the topics are there except 3 which have lost their formatting and none of the images are there either.  How did it decide to only keep 3 and why those 3?  I have no choice but to recreate the whole thing.  This is werid because the Word version generated has has the images and formatting for the single topic word doc, but they ahve been both in the XPJ and in the project directory.  I am assuming that the patch will prevent anything like this again.  Are there other patches I should be installing.

Thanks a bunch.  I thought I had lost my mind there for a sec.

Bummer, I hoped that the solution would be to install the patch

When I returned to the XPJ it was basically destroyed.

Destroyed is a harsh word. If the XPJ was corrupt, you shouldn't be able to open the project. Open the XPJ in notepad, what do you see? You may also want to check out http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/opening/opening_projects.htm.

none of the topics are there except 3 which have lost their formatting and none of the images are there either.

Since the topics are not available on disk, the easiest would be to recover the topics from a back up. If you have a WebHelp output, you can also recover the topics from there. Rick has describe the way to do that: http://www.robowizard.com/RoboWizard/NewProject.htm#MonthlyScry/062004.htm If none of the options work for you, you need to recreate the topics. Sorry, no easy way out.

To avoid problems in the future: Where is your project located? Is the project on a network location or on your local disk? And if it's on local disk, where is it located?

  • If it is on a network location: Copy the project to your local disk. Having your project on a network location is sure to corrupt the project.
  • If it is already on local disk, make sure that the project is placed in a directory with a short path name, such as C:\RoboHelp projects. If the project is inside the my documents folder, the long path name may sometimes give trouble.
