RH 8 - Images on imported pages not displayed after upgrade

I am testing an upgrade from RHX5 to RH8. I have found that some of the images are not being displayed. This occurs in pages that have been imported from Word and the image files are contained in the folder <pagename>_files. Even if I delete the image in the Design editor and insert an image from the root folder, the image will not display when viewed through the viewer.

Any ideas why these images do not display after upgrading?

Update

I have noticed that not all imported docs with a related <pagename>_files folder have this problem. The pages that do have this problem have code referring to vml.

For example:

<![if !vml]><img src="<pagename>_files/image002.jpg"..formatting code..<![endif]>

If the page code does not have this reference to vml, the images are displayed.
