RH7 - Run-time error 49, already tried everything I've seen posted.

Explorer ,
Jan 04, 2008 Jan 04, 2008
Trying to get RoboHelp 7 up and working. I had initial issues with both RoboHelp and RoboHTML. A complete uninstall (from Add/Remove programs, then clean up all folders, .dot files and regedit entries) and a re-install off the network without virus software running was done, and RoboHTML is working.

Still getting the same error for RoboHelp as I was getting before, when I open a project OR create a new project, as soon as Word opens I get a Run-time error 49, "Bad DLL Calling Convention". ]

Word and RH will remain open, and it appears that I can edit the file in Word until I try to save, I get an error window with no information on it. If I try to do a Save As, the file will save, but the updates to the file are not showing up when I regenerate the help file.

I have both Visual Studio 6 and 2005 installed on my machine. Word version is 2007. Cannot disable my virus software, when I'm on the network the computer does a check for software every 5-10 minutes and it will re-install & enable virus protection if it is not on the computer. I've removed all RH .dot files and replaced them, still get the error.

Any suggestions? Anyone??

Welcome to the forum.

What is the date of RoboHelp.dot?

How did you replace the templates? What was the source?

Thanks! I'm not new to the Adobe foums, my old login just got messed up.

RoboHelp.dot file is from 12/12/07.

Right after re-installation, before opening RH, I copied the .dot files to my desktop. Used those to replace system .dot files when I was having problems. Another time (I've been going at this for three days trying various things) I removed at the .dot files and did a repair from the install CD. Tried using older .dot files, and even got the same behavior (error 49).

Thought the question seemed familiar. Might be worth adding a link to the earlier thread.

I asked the question as I recently got a "Bad DLL Calling Convention" on one machine and trashing the templates fixed it.

Just a guess but have you tried uninstalling both RH and Visual Studio (VS)? If not I wonder if doing that and reinstalling with VS being installed first would fix it? Or even installing RH without VS just by way of proving a point?

Also have you searched these forums for just Visual Studio to see what it brings up? (Change your search history in your profile to a long period).

This is the first time I've asked this question. And I have searched the forums. Many, many times. I've tried everything I've found here that might fix my problem, yet nothing has.

VS was installed on this machine before RoboHelp. And uninstalling VS isn't an option, I need it to run the software I need to document.

Sorry, when you said you weren't new to the forums, I thought you were involved in the thread in early December.

Although there isn't a wealth of data to go on, the experience of others and myself is this is a template issue. Humour me on one test. Remove all the RH templates from where they are located on your PC (please let me know the path). Do not replace them, just open RH. Let it replace them.

If that still fails, then I will see if I can get any more information from Adobe.

I wasn't suggesting you uninstall VS permanently, just long enough to reinstall RH and ensure there is no conflict. If we can prove that is where the problem is, if it is, then I can also pursue that.

For now, just try the requested test.

I got a very quick reply from Adobe.

First they confirmed this is likely a template issue. Are you templates stored on the network was one of their questions.

Also please try renaming normal.dot to something else so that Word creates a new normal template. If that makes no difference, then you can reinstate the original one.

OK. Post back on what happens. The sooner the better as I will only have occasional access to the forum for the next few days.

Woo hoo! Thank you!

I renamed Normal.dot, and cleaned out all the robo*.dot files, then did a repair.

Opened RH, tested creating my own project first and it worked, then opened an existing project, and it's happy now.

I suspect it might have been something in the Normal.dot (or Normal.dotm) since I've run a repair for the templates five times already.

And, FYI, this was happening to local files, nothing on a network.

It would help us if you did one more thing. Please rename to new normal.dot and restore the original. That will tell US which of the two things it was.The normal template or the way the RH templates were recreated.

When you have done that, you can revert to the new template if you need to. If not though, the benefit to YOU is you will still have all your Word styles and so on.

I did try that, but I could only find my old Normal.dotm, and not the Normal.dot that I also found and renamed.

I thought normal.dotm was your old template and that normal.dot was the new one you replaced? Don't worry too much. Using the old normal template as normal.dot once more would have proved whether that was the problem or whether it was the RH templates.

We do now know though that if replacing the RH templates doesn't work, then replacing normal.dot with a new version will.

I had given this a break for a while as I had noticed that RHX5 was working locally (ie when i log on to the local machine an not through the company intranet). The RH files are still stored locally on my machine. However I need to get RH to work properly now whilst I am logged on to the network.
Yes the problem I am sure is related to the templates in some way, as even when I try to just open the Robohelp.dot from C:\Documents and Settings\tameem\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\ as a regular document in word I recieve the same Bad DLL error.
This does not happen however when I open the Normal.dot.

I have tried renaming both the Robohelp.dot and Normal.dot and let RH replace them when it reopens the project but still the error comes up.

Is there any other suggestions as this looks like it also has something to do with some network related template?

Tabdullah

Try it the way I set out in Snippets on my site. Mrs VJW tried renaming, replacing with other copies and so on. All failed until she did it the way I have set out.

I have contacted Adobe on this and they advised the only known reason is the templates.

First, thank you for the solution: delete all the templates.

And to help Adobe:
- we just installed RH7 upgrade from RH6 (X5)
- we're using MS Word 2003 with Office 2007 Compatibility Pack installed.
- we have 8 projects from small to large: producing WebHelp (html) to use on intranet.
- copy back our customized Robohelp.dot (577 kb): re-compile no problem
- copy back our customized Normal.dot (308 kb): re-compile no problem

Welcome to the forum Van.

Copying back the templates wasn't part of the instructions. On upgrade the way to do it is to use Word's organiser to copy your styles across.

If it has worked, then don't worry but keep that in mind if you have further problems.

Thanks for the information.

Peter,

You're right. I just missed the point: the copy of my RoboHelp.dot (700 kb) got replaced by RH7 (577 kb). Thanks for all your help.
