RoboHelp 8 - WebHelp can't edit About box

In the primary layout window for WebHelp in RoboHelp 8, there is a check box for "Add About Box" but there's no button allows you to input information in the "about box".   However, in FlashHelp primary layout set up, there is an Add button next to the "Add About Box" check box that provides access to a window where you can input the about information.

Seems like the "Add" button got lost in WebHelp primary layout setup window.

Hi there

There has never been a button for that. You are able to adjust things if you like. But to do so, you edit the skin you are using.

Click View > Pods > Project Setup.

Expand the Skins folder

Double-click the skin you are using and the Skins Editor should open.

From there, choose the About item in the Toolbar tab and click the Pencil icon to edit the information.

I do believe a slight bug exists in that RoboHelp 8 will ignore one of the images you may supply for the actual About dialog that shows when the user clicks the About/Powered By button.

Cheers... Rick

Hi,

If you really want a custom about box, go to your output and edit whskin_banner.htm.

Between the edits for the About Box in the skin and Willam's suggestion to edit the whskin_banner.htm, I was able to change everything in the About Box.

Thanks.

Hi,

I was able to edit my About box.  I removed the Webhelp & Adobe copyrights, changed "author" to contact, the window title, etc..but generating WebHelp keeps overriding my changes.  I  can't figure out how to link the About Box to my new file.  Any suggestions?

I opened the whskin_banner.html file and edited it in Homesite.  I saved the file, but didn't realize it gets replaced when I regenerate.

Then, I thought I could avoid this by creating a new button for my skin, which when clicked opened, would display the "about" information I would like...then just hide Adobe's "about" button in the webhelp layout properties.  Is this a good workaround?

Now, I'm having difficulty with the script to open a new window onclick.....I feel so limited when I have to use fields & boxes to create my stuff, or maybe I should use something else? 🙂

powered_by_robohelp.gif

After updating the whskin_banner.html file in the !SSl! folder to create the about box. I searched for "powered by robohelp.gif" that is the button image and modified with the appropriate information for my help system. See example above.  I then made sure that gif file was saved in the top level of !SSL! folder and in "!SSL!\WebHelp_Pro\WebHelp_Skin_Files\PARA_help_Skin" folder so that I didn't have to select a different image in the "About Button" field

in the About window.

Peter -

I didn't edit it in the skin editor because there was only a few choices of fields to edit.  For example, I want "Author" to be replaced with the word "Contact" and I want to remove the powered by Robohelp & Adobe information and link.

Pjv -

I understand what you're saying (good idea!), but I want to change and remove some of the standard text in the About box.

I would make my changes in the whskin_banner.html file.  I actually created blank button gifs for the glossary tabs on/off  and browse button that were the same color as the Toolbar background. I then replaced the existing gifs with those blanks and it worked fine. I'm sure you can edit the wording in the html file to meet your needs and if necessary, remove content.

Yes, I have changed the whskin_banner.htm file to my needs.  My issue is that it keeps reverting back to the original file by adding back in the stuff I took out (Webhelp, powered by, window title) with each generation. This doesn't happen to you?  Where is your file saved?

Right, the header is one of my issues, too.  I thought of a workaround by making my own new button for my skin (my own About button) and linking it to a new page/window containing all my information. This way, I can control 100% of the information, including the header. I would turn off Adobe's "About" button display in the layout properties.  Kind of a workaround, I suppose.  Although, I'm having trouble with the script to open a new window. Normally, I would just add "target=_blank", but I'm at a loss on how to do it with RH.....I can't get the scripting stuff to work.

If you edit the file in the output, then every time you generate it will get overwritten.

Option 1 is to keep a copy and replace it every time.

Option 2 is to edit the source file in Program Files but then it will be the same for all projects. Do backup the original before you do that.

I might have done the changes in the .skn file that was created in the !SkinSubFolder!\!SkinSubFolder!\GS_WebHelp_skin (where orange is my custom skin's folder. Obviously, the whskin_banner.htm file gets update each time you generate. However, it is interesting that the .skn file in the \!SSL!\WebHelp_Pro\WebHelp_Skin_Files\GS_WebHelp_skin folder does not.

So I'm assuming that the whskin_banner.htm pulls something from that !SSL! subfolder. Not sure.

Back to work for me. Sorry that I couldn't help more. Peter is the real specialist here so I would definitely trust his insight.

!SSL!>WebHelp_Pro  folder.  I didn't try to change the wording in the file. Here's a copy of my file. However, as I said previously, there was no way that I was able to change window title that's note in red below.

Hi there

As Peter says, you may edit the source file where RoboHelp has been installed.

My purpose for posting here is to ask if you are publishing to the RoboHelp Server. If not, why are you using WebHelp Pro output?

Cheers... Rick

Rick - yes I'm publishing to RoboHelp Server 8 database. To be honest, I worked on the customized About box last November and can't recall all of the things that I did to make it work. I do know that I used the online help and a lot of testing to get the tabs to display and work correctly. The About box was the easiest piece, once I figured out how to change the original images.

Sorry -- a little brain dead. Only thing that I couldn't seem to change no matter how hard I tried was the window title bar, which still defaults to "About WebHelp Pro."  I think that has to do with RoboHelp coding although I changed it in the skin's html file.

I am facing the same issue with RoboHelp 10. I want to edit all the information in the About dialog box. The client wants to replace the RH information with the client-specific information. I was able to replace only specific informtion but not all. Please guide to update All information in the About dialog box.

That has already been covered in this thread. See the first grey indented reply. You can edit the output file or you can replace it another file of the same name.
