Robohelp.dot Why Me?

New Here ,
Mar 04, 2008 Mar 04, 2008
Why is it when I open a Robohelp project, word insists on saving the Robohelp.dot file. This automatically happens the first time I save or close a word document associated with the project. However this is not the case for my co-worker who accesses the same project files. We are both running Robohelp X5.0.1 Word 2003. The Robohelp.dot file associated with our projects has always been dated 25/05/2003 .... now any project I touch it gets updated. Our systems are basically identical. The only recent change on my machine is that I installed Adobe Acrobat 8, she is running v6. Why me?

I had the same problem with my RH7 everytime I saved the document RH7 asked to save the template too. It got fixed when I reinstalled both word and RH. It may also have something to do with the security level set for Macros in word. Reduce the security level and check it out. Re-installing shud solve the problem.

Thanks so much for your reply.

I did try to reinstall RH..twice now. However I am sceptical that the reinstall actually worked because after the reinstall the first time I launched RH it remembered the paths to my last visited projects.... which I wouldn't think it should do. I did reboot my machine after I removed RH and then again after I reinstalled RH.

I also checked my macro settings in word and they are set to low.

RH like many programs does leave some history such as visited projects. I see this behaviour with software from many companies.

Not sure about the saving. I suspect it could also be a Windows patch. I used to see the message with RH6 but not with RH7.

Thanks for the feedback Peter. Good to understand that a RH uninstall can in fact still leave some history.

Re Windows patch, my co-worker and I are running identical machines, except for the Acrobat version. The same patches, etc. get pushed down to both our machines, yet she isn't prompted to save the RoboHelp.dot when she closes a .doc file in the project.

Any uninstall can leave history, and many do for logical reasons although I believe there should be a user option to truly delete.

Depends what lengths you want to go to on fixing this. Check out ALL your Word options. Check your RH templates in Docs and Settings or Users. Same date and file size. Do you have a copy of RoboHelp.dot in the project? You shouldn't but some folks do.

Come back if you find anything.

see the process I followed was first uninstall RoboHelp then Uninstall Word. After that, Installed Word and then Robohelp. Then the problem was gone.
I think this could have something to do with the macros. The templates could be getting saved in Word's macro projects. I was trying to convert an existing word document with Robohelp. I had also an error stating that Robohelp was not able to open Word. I openend the main document in word. Then openend the Macros settings and deleted all the macro projects. Its working pretty well now.

You can also try this after you have uninstalled -- In the start menu, open the Run dialog box, type regedit.exe and click Ok. Open the node HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Open the branch Software and delete Adobe from there. Similarly you can check under other Nodes if there is any branch called Software check to see if it contains a folder for Adobe. Deleting it from HKEY_CURRENT_USER may be enough. Don't delete anything unrelated to Adobe.

Back up the registry before you make any changes!
