Strange Web Help Output (duplicate embedded)

New Here ,
Jan 14, 2011 Jan 14, 2011

I am baffled by this. I've tested in multiple browsers (IE, Firefox, and Chrome), checked window settings, experimented with different skins and output settings, but still can't get this to display correctly. I'm getting this erorr in both RoboHelp 8 AND RoboHelp 9. The issue is very strange and I believe may be related to iframe element in generated HTML.

Tak a look at the attached screenshot to see for yourself....and then help!  ; )

I'd love to help but you haven't really given us much to go on. I might suggest you read the link provided below, then return here to clarify things.

I did read through that prior to posting, but maybe I wasn't clear enough. The problem described above was generated using RoboHelp HTML 8, and then subsequently with RoboHelp HTML 9.

The generated output is WebHelp (thought you could tell that by the screen shot because it is the default layout).

Not sure what more you need, but let me know.

Hello again

Sorry, indeed I could clearly see it was WebHelp output. I also saw that you mentioned RoboHelp 8 and RoboHelp 9 were both used.

Here is where it gets really confusing from the standpoint of one attempting to help you out.

What you have done is the equivalent of walking into a doctor's office and saying your arm hurts. You are equipped with a picture of your arm from when it wasn't hurting and now you are asking the doctor to tell you exactly why your arm is hurting based on looking at the pictures. So what I'm asking now are some diagnostic questions.

You mentioned an error? I simply see two images and no error message. There is nothing to indicate under which conditions you are seeing each image. Was the one above what you wanted and it was produced using RoboHelp 8? Then you used RoboHelp 9 and saw the bottom image?

Where are you seeing these images? When you run from your local hard drive? After publishing to a Server?

So I was hoping you would provide more detail about what you were expecting to see and under what conditions you were seeing it.

Hopefully that gives you a hint as to why I might be asking more questions.

Cheers... Rick

Ok, sorry for being so unclear, but I really don't have much to go on. Maybe this will help:

  • The screen shot above is a SINGLE screen shot. As you can see, the webhelp output is replicated (i.e. appears twice). This is NOT two separate outputs. It is almost as if a second output is generated within a frame of itself. I really don't know and cannot explain....which is why I am posting here.
  • When I say "error", I am referring the first point above. RH does not display any sort of error for this generated output. As you can see from the screen shot though, there is obviously something wrong.
  • The "conditions" I see this output are anytime I view the generated output.
  • The output shown appears when using RH 8 OR when using RH 9. My point here is that it isn't tied to a particular version of RH. And since I tested and confirmed the same output in multiple browsers, it is not a browser issue.
  • I see this output when viewing on local output (i.e. SSL directory) and on published server.
  • And to your last point, what I am expecting to see is the top half of the screen.

I really don't know how to describe this any better. The only potential clue might be in the generated HTML itself, but when I attempt to insert that here it screws up the display....Doh!

Forget my arm....my head hurts.

Hello again

Thanks for the information. It helps.

Sorry about the confusion. I first thought it was something where you had one output, screen capped that and opened another output and screen capped that. Then you were wondering why the two outputs were different.

That one is a stumper for sure. I've never seen it myself and I really don't recall anyone having reported it.

Sorry, but I thought of one more question. When you open the output, exactly how are you opening it?

  • Are you double-clicking the WebHelp Start Page from Windows Explorer?
  • Are you opening it from an associated application?
  • Are you double-clicking a topic inside the help from Windows Explorer?

Cheers... Rick

... and have you tried regenerating the help to a new folder after deleting the CPD file, with RoboHelp closed?

Also try creating a new layout, not a duplicate.

I have seen this once but don't recall how I fixed it.

Thanks for the responses, gentlmen...

@Rick - With respect to how I am opening the WebHelp....

  • Are you double-clicking the WebHelp Start Page from Windows Explorer? Yes. Additionally, I've opened it using the RH "View" feature.
  • Are you opening it from an associated application? No, this is purely a hosted help system. The "embedded window" behavior that I've described occurs both locally and on the server. Therefore, it doesn't lead me to believe it is an environment issue.
  • Are you double-clicking a topic inside the help from Windows Explorer? No, I am only opening the WebHelp system by launching the designated Start page and/or using the RH View feature.

@Peter - Working on your suggestions now...I'll get back to you.
