Third-Party HTML Editors

New Here ,
May 01, 2009 May 01, 2009

RoboHelp 8 documentation describes the ability to use a third party HTML editor (such as Dreamweaver) from within RoboHelp 8 instead of the default editor. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there benefits to using one over the built in editor such as more features, less development time, etc?

Also, the forum spell check marks Adobe product names as misspelled words...

Thanks,

Nathan

Hi Nathan

This ability is not new with RoboHelp 8. It's simply a continuation of a feature that has been there for some time.

I've always found the RoboHelp HTML editor to be more than satisfactory. But I do know that many users have used Dreamweaver and other editors too.

Pros

  • It used to be the case that an editor such as Dreamweaver would produce cleaner HTML (which is why so many liked it).
  • You may simply be more comfortable with a different editor and as a result feel more productive in a faster way.

Cons

  • If you use a third party editor you forego some of the added features provided by RoboHelp
  • Ability to apply Conditional Build Tags to topic content
  • Ability to easily apply DHTML effects in topics
  • Ability to easily insert things such as Related Topics, See Also and Shortcut controls in topics

I use RoboHelp because it is a nice editing environment that allows me to do what I need in pretty rapid fashion. That's its innate beauty. Well, at least to me it is.

Cheers... Rick
