Topics Jumping to Bottom of Page

Explorer ,
May 07, 2025 May 07, 2025

I'll try to describe this the best I can. I am using RH 2022.5.28.  When I click on topics in the TOC, some of them are jumping to the middle or the bottom of the page as if there is an achor tag or bookmark in the middle of the page. When I examine the code I see no reason for this to be happening. Has this happened to anyone else or know what could be causing this?

Update on the Update: Solution Found

The offending code seems to be redundancies in style classes. Some of the pages have spans styles nested inside other styles and removing them has solved the problem. See snip as an example.

Nothing I have seen reported. Logically it can only happen if the TOC is pointing to a bookmark and it is in the topic.

Try creating a new TOC to see if it behaves?

Good idea. Use Auto create for this test. The order will be wrong but that's not the issue.

Can you explain how to Auto create.

Thanks, I tried the Auto Create option and that didn't work either. I might have to just recreate the topics from scratch.

Didn't work in what way? Is it still finding spurious bookmarks mid-topic to link to?

Correct, it didn't work in solving the problem. The page will still open either at the bottom or midway through the page.

Can you screenshot the HTML of the TOC link and the destination in the topic?

Not sure exactly how you want me to capture the HTML so I did different ways. Pic 1 is the link path that shows when I hover over the topic name in the TOC. Pic 2 is a snip of the HTML in the browser inspector. Pic 3 shows the top of the topic when I right click and select 'Open in New Tab' (it opens normally when I do that). As you can see there are multiple steps in the topic. Pic 4 shows where the page displays when I select the topic in the TOC, notice it jumps to step 11.

While helpful, those images aren't really what I was looking for - the TOC entry seems to reference the topic file name (fine), but then when you show the topic, I would have expected to see a bookmark stuck to the top header title (CMS-something something) - but you're not showing the code view of that chunk.

Is this what you mean? No anchor or bookmark tags in the HTML. Nothing in the header.

You're saying that the focus jumps to that image located at the top of the page when you use the TOC link?

Yes, it jumps to that part of the page as if there is an anchor or bookmark tag but there is nothing in the code that I can see causing that to happen.

Can you show the topic in RH with the symbols turned on? I wonder if all the stuff at the beginning of the topic is coming in from someplace else, so that image is really the "top" of the page.

Does this occur with all browsers?

What device are you viewing on?

I offered to check your project. If you can't share it, can you replicate it by importing a few topics into a new project that replicates the problem.

At the moment it's a bit like asking your garage to diagnose a problem but refusing to let them see the car.. ☺

Just trying to figure out how I can share it. Even with only a few topics the file is too big to share via email and we can't share items via a drive to people outside our agency (I work for the court system). If I export it onto an exernal drive to share from a personal computer it automatically encripts so I'm trying to think of a work around.

I'm viewing the project on a desktop and laptop, testing in Chrome and Edge.

Update: on one of the topics that was jumping to the bottom, I deleted some redundant code where an inline 'p' tag was nested inside an 'h1' tag. Removing that made it display the correct way. I'm not seeing this same code irregularity in the others though so I'll keep digging.

How to share is explained in the link I sent but it looks like you are on to the cause.
