Has anyone ever had to have their Online Help translated to a different language?

Are there translation services that work with RoboHelp, or do you simply have to send a

PDF or Word document of your Online Help and have them translate that?

You have two choices.

  1. Get your source files translated. This is the more expensive option but means that for the next iteration of your project you just need to get any changed
content translated (e.g. topics + TOC, Index, Glossary, etc.)
  2. Get your output (e.g. PDF) translated. This is arguably the cheaper option but it means you'll have to complete the entire translation exercise for each iteration of your output.

Option 1 is the preferred option. However a word of caution here. You'll have to provide a copy of your entire RH project source to the translation agency. As they will have to work with RH, make 100% sure that they know RH and are familiar with the file / project structure. There are loads of translation companyies around so choose widely. Unfortunately I have not had my content translated (yet!) so am not in a position to comment on a good one. No doubt someone else will chip in here.

In addition to Colum's excellent tips, you might also want to take a look at Ben Minson's article in the Adobe Developer Center.
