When I attempt to edit Topic Properties of an open topic, RH crashes

Participant ,

Using RH10, to generate CHM files.  When I attempt to edit topic properties of an open topic, RH crashes.  Is there a patch for this?

Thanks!

I have discovered what was causing the problem:  I had customized a setting so that word wrap worked in the design pane (my view is set to 125%).  Once I changed this setting back to the original value of FALSE, I can now edit Topic Properties of an open topic. The setting I changed was:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\RoboHelp\9.00\RoboEditor\Defaults\Pag eLayout

Thanks to everyone who tryed to help!

If it were a bug we would all be dead in the water!

First try trashing the CPD file and reopening the project.

If that fails, does it happen with the sample projects? Click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.

Hi Peter:

Based on your response, here’s my results:

I renamed my CPD file to ‘Old_CPD.cpd’

Upon opening project, RH created a new CPD file

Edit of Topic Properties on open topic still causes crash.

Opened the sample project = EmployeeCare

Edit of Topic Properties on open topic still causes crash.

Suggestions?

Tina

Are all other programs working correctly?

Have IT made any changes that might be relevant?

Was Rh10 working OK or is this a new installation that has never worked? In other words your earlier version was OK but the problem started on upgrade.

Have you rebooted the PC since this started?

Beyond that it might be time to consider a reinstall.

Let us know how you get on.

Here are my responses to Peter's questions:

Have IT made any changes that might be relevant?

Nne that I am aware of

Was Rh10 working OK or is this a new installation that has never worked? In other words your earlier version was OK but the problem started on upgrade.

I have worked with RH for over 10 years, I was able to edit Topic Properties in previous versions of RH, so this problem started with RH10

Have you rebooted the PC since this started?

I reboot or restart my PC frequently, sometimes daily

Beyond that it might be time to consider a reinstall.

I have not performed a re-install

OK. It sounds like time for a reinstall.

I know this is somewhat delayed, but when you say "crash" what exactly happens? Does RH close unexpectedly? Popup a Dr Watson message? Freeze (you can't click on anything or open any dialog boxes)?

Hi Amber –

Once I perform any Topic Properties editing on an open topic and I click Apply or OK on the Topic Properties box, the following message appears:

I have no choice but to click ‘Close program’ and all changes are lost. If you have any recommendations to fix this, I’d love to hear your ideas!

See the emails from the forum, you cannot attach images to emailed replies. They don't survive the trip.

You must post via the web interface.

Thanks Tina, unfortunately I don't have anything else to offer. I was thinking maybe the 'crash' was a 'freeze' which I could have offered a suggestion for.

Hmm, although, something is tickling my memory - just can't bring it to mind.

I did a bit of a search and found this one which may or may not apply, depending on what you have installed.

If I can extract the niggle from my brain, I'll post back.

Does the problem happen on every topic or just specific ones?

Is this a RH project from an earlier version?

Do you get the same problesm if you edit the topic properties of one of the sample projects RH installs?

Hi –

The problem happens with every topic, every project.

Yes, the projects were authored using an earlier versions of RH

Yes, the same result occurs when I open any of the sample projects provided with RH (I tried using the Employee Care sample)

Sigh…

Yeah. Sounds like your install is missing something critical then. I'd try reinstalling as recommended.

Good sleuthing.

I'd recommend reporting the bug, if you haven't already.

So this begs the question:

Is there a way to wrap text in the design view when you increase the zoom in the Design view? I've wanted to do that too. But it sounds like there's not a good way to do this, right?

You can turn on word wrap, but it did end up causing me some problems. However, this is how I did it:

Close RoboHelp

Click Start > Run and type regedit into the Run dialog, then press Enter.

The Windows registry editor should open.

Locate the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\RoboHelp\9.00\RoboEditor\Defaults\Pag eLayout

Double-click the key name and change the value from FALSE to TRUE

Leave the Windows registry editor open (in case you wish to revert)

Restart RoboHelp, open a topic and see what you think.

If you dislike, return to the Registry Editor and revert the setting back to FALSE.

Hi there

A simpler way might be to export the key to a file before you change it. Then if you dislike it, just double-click the exported key to change it back.

Simpler than opening the editor and navigating and whatnot.

Cheers... Rick

Thanks. I did what Tina said and received the same crash when I tried to change the topic properties, so it sounds like text wrapping while zoomed in does work but only as long as you don't try to change the topic's properties.

Once this setting is changed, you can edit the Topic Properties, but the topic must be closed. Many times, that is just not the best way to work…

Best of luck!
