Why can't I open a pdf file directly?

New Here ,
Sep 24, 2010 Sep 24, 2010

Since installing Acrobat 9, every time I try to open a pdf file by double-clicking on it, the print dialog box pops up.  If I close it, then the document content is displayed on the screen like I wanted.  Is this a new "feature" that I wasn't warned about, or is there some user option set incorrectly somewhere, or what?  It's really irritating, and adds significantly to the frustration level I'm developing over other unnecessary changes in this new version.

Are you a user of Adobe's RoboHelp product? If not and your question is only related to Acrobat, then you should ask in the Acrobat forum. This forum is for people producing Word and PDF documents from RoboHelp.

Thank you for telling me where I "should have" posted my question.  Trouble is, when I was looking for a place to post it, I couldn't find anything that looked anything like a relevant place.  I even did several searches, some of which included the word acrobat, and found nothing useful.  This forum, or these forums, are not very friendly to someone who doesn't already know where things are.  I'll go look elsewhere.

Hi there

I can tell you are irritated. But I might ask which is more helpful to you.

Would you prefer that folks just assume you are using the RoboHelp product and begin offering answers about how to use an application you aren't using? Or would you prefer to be advised up front that you aren't in the correct place and to try and steer you to the correct place where you might find help?

I assure you that Peter wasn't being rude. He was only trying to assist with the information he had to work with.

I know it can seem daunting to know exactly where to ask for help. Especially when Adobe has 80 - 90 different software products. I'm not sure if your statement of "I'll go look elsewhere" means that you don't feel we were friendly enough here so you will just look elsewhere on the web or if it means that you will try a different Adobe forum.

Assuming it means the former, I do wish you the best of luck in solving your issue. If it means the latter, you might begin by visiting the main forums page at the link below. Once there, click the drop-down selector and you should see a lengthy list of all the forums to chose from. I'd have pointed you to a specific forum, but it isn't clear whether you are meaning the full Acrobat application or if you are using the free Acrobat Reader.

Click here to visit the main forums page

Cheers... Rick

Rick:

Thank you for your response.  I'm sure you meant well, but my level of frustration continues to build.

My immediate inclination is to say, "Well, excuuuuuse me."  I do believe I said "Thanks" and I do believe that my explanation of the problem clearly said "Acrobat 9" with no hint of the word "Reader."  What should I have said to clearly show that I meant Acrobat and not Reader?  I assumed that leaving off the word reader made it clear that I wasn't talking about reader.  I do know the difference.

I did not mean to imply that I thought anyone was being rude, and I offer my sincerely apology if it sounded that way.  What I meant to say was that, in my eyes -- an inexperienced user -- these forums look like mass confusion.  I can't find anything, and the search function didn't help.  My last search included the word "acrobat" and the results took me to the RoboHelp forum.  I gave up and wrote my first message.  Is this really what Adobe considers help?

Where, exactly, should I sound off if I'm dissatisfied with the usefulness of this forum?  Like I said, I couldn't find anything useful, and Peter's ID made it sound like he was an official somebody who might listen and pass it on if he wasn't the right person.

The other place I went to was the forum Peter recommended, and I did receive a response there, which was basically, "Sorry, but I can't help."  Now what am I supposed to do?  Would you interpret this as helpful?

I thank you and Peter for your attempts to help, but even though I've gone to the "right" place now, I still haven't been to find anything useful. and I have no solution to the problem.  I'm right back where I started.

I have a problem.  I can't find a solution.  Adobe seems to have no desire to help.  The forums have failed me.

I wonder if Adobe wonders why PDF Create is successful in spite of the many problems it has?

Stepping one back in the breadcrumb trail if you clicked the link I gave would take you to this list of Acrobat forums.

http://forums.adobe.com/community/acrobat?view=overview

I thought the one I gave was correct for Acrobat but admittedly I looked quickly while on holiday.

Adobe Community Professional is a recognition by Adobe of users of their products who assist other users.

Help from other users via the forums is free. If other users cannot help you, then you will need to either try some other forum found via Google or links on the Acrobat pages (http://acrobatusers.com/forum for example) or use Adobe's official support. Peter:

In reply to your last question:

No the issue isn't solved, but, thanks to your willingness to help, I have at least been able to find the forum where I should have submitted the problem.  Unfortunately, the response I received there was, "Good luck!"

I'm right back where I was when I first submitted the problem, but I do thank you for trying to lead me in the right direction.

That's OK. Do try the external forum as well. Last time I heard you couldn't be shot for that.
