Xrefs to figure titles in linked FrameMaker files

Feb 01, 2012 Feb 01, 2012

In my FrameMaker structured documents, figure titles include both a number and text (for example, "Figure 3: Initial Collector Model"). But cross-references include only the figure number (for example, "as shown in Figure 3").

In my style mappings in RoboHelp, I selected <$paratext> as the RoboHelp style for Figure cross-references. My assumption was that RoboHelp would display the text of the paragraph being referenced. So while my FM document said "as shown in Figure 3", the RH topic would say "as shown in Initial Collector Model".

However, RH is displaying the text from the topic title instead of the figure title, which is, of course, very bad. I tried including the paragraph text in the FM cross-reference format (in addition to figure number), but that didn't make any difference.

Has anyone else seen this issue? Is there a solution?

That would probably work. In this case, we might do just as well avoiding cross-references to figure titles in topics that are going to be linked to RH. After all, if we were authoring in RH (without the luxury of automatically generated figure numbers), we'd just say "as shown in the following figure." But I'll keep the FM source tip in mind as I encounter other formatting issues.
