RoboHelp 8 blow-up with right-click on TOC item

Does anyone know if this issue has been addressed by Adobe?

I am also having the issue -- whenever I right-click on the TOC column within RoboHelp 8 HTML, it gives me the previously reported error message and shuts the program down.  Not a horrible issue -- but I have lost work when I forgot that I can't do that action in this application.

Thanks,

Bob

Reading the thread it looks to be a project specific problem as posters who have encountered say it is not with all projects. You can test by going to one of the samples. Click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.

Gravenstein posted her solution and I would start with just deleting the CPD and PSS files in a copy of the project.

Thanks Peter,

I opened up a new project, using the "MyCompany Savings and Loan Guide" P&P template, and it does allow me to right-click in the TOC window.

If I do start deleting CPD and PSS files in a copy of the project, I know that the CPD file will be re-built automatically, but what needs to be done to re-create the PSS file?  Will it also be automatically rebuilt?

Thanks,

Bob

Thanks Peter, but no luck.  Deleted both files, saw that they were re-built with today's date (and much smaller file sizes), but right-clicking on the TOC window results in the above error screen and a program shut-down.

Hi Bob

Is this an upgraded project? Does this happen in a new project or one of the samples?

I'm confused by your mention of "TOC Column". Are you saying that you are right-clicking the TOC Column in the Topic List pod?

Cheers... Rick

Thanks Rick,

It's the TOC window that opens up after you double-click the TOC listing in the Project Manager window.

This is an upgraded project -- probably has gone through three different versions of RH at this point.

It's a moster of a P&P guide, so I may have to resign if it has to be re-built. 😉

Hi Bob

Okay, I'm going to suggest something that will sound at first very much like what has been suggested before, but trust me, there is a twist.

Start with ensuring you have a good backup copy. This is for that Justin guy. Justin Case.

Open the project.

Expand the TOC section in the Project Manager pod. But DO NOT open the TOC. Just expand the section so you can see the TOC that is listed.

Try right-clicking the TOC section and choosing "New Table of Contents".

Give it a name and click to enable the option to "Copy existing Table of Contents".

Click the ellipsis ( ... ) icon and choose the existing TOC file, then click OK to dismiss the dialog.

Hopefully all is well at this point.

Now for some tricksy stuff.

Right-click your new TOC in the Project Manager and choose "Set as Default".

Click the original TOC and delete it.

Now open the new TOC in the editor and see if the problem persists. Report back with findings.

Cheers... Rick

Thanks Rick,

It was worth a try, and I see where you were going with it, but it didn't work.  Still crashed.

I even tried deleting the CPD and PSS files after I made the new TOC file, with no luck.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Hi Bob

I have another idea for you. But before I toss it out I want to ask a question. Does it still crash if you create a totally new TOC and attempt to only make edits to the new TOC?

Cheers... Rick

Hi Rick,

Just tried this -- Yes, RH crashes if I make a totally new TOC (not using the "copy existing table of contents" option), open it in the TOC editing window, and right-click in that window.  RH gives me the error, then crashes.

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob

I just split your beginning reply of this thread into its own thread. Hopefully that will make it easier for all of us to follow.

Sooo, to summarize:

You have a project that was upgraded from an older version. You have tried deleting the .CPD and .PSS files to no avail.

Did you try what TW 75 suggested with deleting the rhlayout.apj? It's worth a shot.

Other than that, how large is the project when you zip it up? Assuming it's small enough to be easily transferred, would you be amenable to sending it across so I can take a look at it to try and see if I can isolate what is happening? If you can't for whatever reason, that's fine. Just thought I'd offer.

Cheers... Rick

Just chipping in to say that deleting the rhlayout.apj in RH11 stopped the crash when right-clicking on a toc item for a single project that started experiencing this issue.
