These two areas LOOK like they're on the same plane, yet one is relatively sharp and the other is muddied.

The depth of field is shallow, causing too much of the subject to be out of focus. The highlights seem to be a bit too high with not enough blacks resulting in a burnt out appearance. It's the same for both images.
