Intellectual property protection applies to creations and doesn’t make exceptions for being wrecked. If it is identifiable and protected you need a release. If over 100 years old many thing are ok - but not all eg Eiffel Tower at night.

What about pill boxes and air raid shelters? Do I need a Release for these abandoned structures from the second world war? The government I assume if I do need it or the air force/navy/army?

The only information we can use is Adobe's guidelines to Stock Contributors. There is no point trying to get down to more detail, because the checkers can only use Adobe's guidelines, just like you. There are many classes of pictures that just cannot be used. Adobe's guidelines are, of course, defensive because getting sued is expensive.

As I feared. Every one nowadays wants to make money from everything and makes legal claims for everything too. I am in the UK but the litigation culture is creeping in over here. This is why I used to put my images on Facebook for free and on an online magazine with a small, specialised audience that couldn't afford to pay me anyway.
