I have a standard licence for an image I would like to use on the cover of our non profit magazine. It is distributed to no even close 500,000 people and is not sold. Wondering if I still need to purchase an extended licence? I've read both licence terms and am still concerned about the distribution terminology used. Any advice would be great, thank you.

You can use the picture for the cover of the magazine in a standard license. Extended license is needed for products for sale (like t-shirts, mugs, posters) where the primary value lies in the picture. So as long as the primary value is in the magazine’s content, you are fine.

Please note that you may still be required to acknolewdge the picture if the use is an editorial one.
