ah cool, thank you so much!  i think i would like to keep it in color.. but i want to control the intensity of the different channels - beyond just simply inverting, what would you recommend for that?

A levels or curve node also gives you individual channel adjustment. You would need to split if you want to, for example, blend each channel with another input separately though.
