I am getting  Failed to decode error.    Photoshop opens them just fine  with Nvidia  plugin installed.

ps. probleem solved actually.  You need to save 8 bit RGBA and  16 bit gray   , not 16bit RGBA.   It's not great although  since I'd prefer to pack gray channels  into  one 16 bit  RGBA .   But looks like only Designer and Photoshop read them back.

Hi,
Thank you for reporting this issue, it is indeed a bug.
I have logged it.
It might be solved in the future Painter updates, but no promises as it depends on it's priority.
Thank you for your help,
Kind Regards,
Geoffroy Sc

Would be also nice if Adobe Bridge  and windows  file manager would be able to show thumbnail  of 16 bit rgba  dds.  If you could do anything about that.    I found dds a quickes to load and export formats , especially in Designer
