Hi,
This week I applied for a student license for substance painter. It got approved, and tried to download it. The problem is that I use Ubuntu, and it turns out I have to pay 150 dollars extra as a student, just because I use Linux. Costumer support told me that my plan only allows mac and windows installs, but I can pay for the Steam version to get it for Ubuntu. This means they do have a native Linux build that is perfectly functional, but choose to not make it available because reasons... I guess?? The sad part is that many people choose Linux becuse they can't affford windows or an apple computer, and adobe makes these people pay extra just becuase they can. This is just pure evil. Like can't they just give a steam key for Ubuntu if they have problems putting the linux build on their site or something?? But no, they choose not to.

Hello @Ábris254831524n4q,
I understand the frustration. Unfortunately, Substance 3D Painter isn't available with Linux through the Adobe subscription, because Adobe doesn't have a distribution platform for Linux (that's the simple answer), and from my personal point of view, I wouldn't expect any change soon.
I agree this is bothering considering we are able to run Painter on Linux, that's why we kept it on Steam.
However, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to help you with this issue.

What do you exactly mean by distribution platform?

I know it's not something you specifically can really do anything about, BUT WOW, that's an extra $AUD 300 (for only one of them) for me just to have it run on a different platform. Also add on the fact that many people would have a subsciption anyways to other software, cause it's highly unlikely that they'd just be using substance... This is not sustainable, especially when inflation is making it harder and harder to even live.
At the very least, some resources to get creative cloud and the most important tools like photoshop and substance to run somewhat reliably via Wine would go a long way.

Bummer that I can't just use my subscription licence for the linux version on steam.
Looks like adobe will now miss out on my money, when I cancel my subscription (that I'm now paying for half a decade or so) and just buy a perpetual licence on steam. All because you can't be bothered to release the linux version outside of steam. What a weird business decision

Adobe's applications never had linux versions. That being said we wanted to keep an alternative for people still needing such a licence, and Steam is the alternative.
@kai29295357kye3 From what you're telling me, I feel like this is a win-win situation. We specifically made the steam licence for people who don't want a subscription and/or people who don't need the full collection and/or people who need a lifetime licence. If you're sparing money with a Steam licence, sounds like a good news.

But you *do* have a linux version. It's distributed via steam and steam only.
The problem I'm running into now is, that I can't really buy the current 2024 version on steam, because it will be obsolete in a couple weeks.
And if I ever decide to also get substance designer, I will pay significantly *more* each year (if I decide to upgrade), as I currently still have the legacy allegorithmic subscription for 17ish bucks a month for both tools. So right now I pay as much for both version, as I would with the steam version.
Having a perpetual licence for a version is nice (and I really appreciate that it exists!), but I'm actually one of the few people who doesn't mind a monthly subscription, as long as it's affordable for hobbyists and I get regularly new useful features. So in my case the 17 bucks a month for painter and designer is a great value. But I just can't use it for a linux version, for whatever weird reason.
The whole platform is completely unusable with tools like Wine or Proton. So thanks for disregarding any and all customers who dare to use linux, I guess.
Might as well pay for the licence and crack the software, so I can use it with wine on linux...

Students who use Ubuntu can't download the Linux build for free, only the Windows and Mac version. They can only BUY it for 150 euros on steam(which is 150 more than windows and mac users have to). Please make it available.
