The world is changing.
Right now it is very important to celebrate artists who share their work on LinkedIn. LIKE their work and leave nice comments.

I am sure you are wondering why I am asking this of everyone.  One word... MIDJOURNEY.

Lately, people have been posting their Midjourney creations on LinkedIn and people have been complimenting them as if the person created it. But it was the AI.

The other issue is that Midjourney has been sampling artists without permission online... no acknowledgment and no compensation. Yet Midjourney has a subscription fee.  And some Midjourney creators turn around and sell those creations as NFTs.

One well-known artist noticed people were typing her name in the parameters to produce work similar to hers.  Read this series of tweets from the artist.

Additionally, Vice reported that one art competition chose an AI art creation over the real artists who submitted their work.

I am not denying that AI art is not art.  It is a new form of art. But I do not like that companies like Midjourney sample artists who have even placed watermarks on their work. That they sample from brands and people who have placed copyrights on their art.

I support artists who have honed their skills over time, that practice and aim at getting better or developing new skills/techniques... those who master software like what Adobe has to offer.

So when you see artists posting their original work on LinkedIn or other social media platforms make sure to compliment them and tell them to keep sharing!

I would be totally fine with an AI art company such as Midjourney partnering with Adobe Stock or Getty Images if the artists and photographers get compensation and acknowledgment when their image is sampled.  But sampling without permission is a big NO NO in my book.  As we all know how much time goes into becoming a good artist and learning how to use tools and software to create designs.

Just my little rant.

I knew they were sampling art such as the French Impressionists etc but I had no idea of any of this. Thank you for posting and I could not agree more. I have found my own work on people's blogs with the watermark still on it, and on Facebook and others. And now this. Phooey.

If someone wants to use AI images, have at it.  It's no more protecable than a string of random numbers on a screen.   Giphy anyone?

Don't get me wrong.  I absolutely support real artists and I think AI can be a useful tool.  But please don't insult my intelligence by comparing real art with AI images. They are apples & alligators.

If you actually programmed the software that makes AI possible, that would be a different story because programming requires talent & skill.  Typing a few characters into a command line requires zero talent and zero skill.  Software is protectable; data entry is not.

I see AI graphics as inspiration for an original artwork in whatever medium you choose.  But I wouldn't be caught dead putting my name on a Midjourney image and calling it my own "art."  That's disingenuous and a slap in the face to real artists everywhere.

Just my 2 cents.

Similar is not the same though. Every artist who ever lived has taken from previous artists in some way or other.

Like walnuts and brains. They look similar but they're not the same. Walnuts are great for the brain. The brain is good for zombies. 😛🙂
