Bob, that is so cruel.  It's the modern day equivalent of a Bambi-burger.

Is it cynical to suspect that news rooms and editorial offices get excited when something like this happens?  Are they thinking 'This is a tragedy', or 'This will make for great headlines'?    I love that Trump thought it a good idea to dump several tons of water onto the fragile remains from the fire, and priceless works of art beneath it.

There's a newsroom saying, "get it first, but get it right." So the ashes had not even cooled, and I got the first 3 year estimate. Then it went to 5, them after a professional audit, we arrive at the more realistic figure.

Still Notre Dame is a national treasure and a world class heritage landmark. One thing I was surprised to learn, all Catholic churches built before 1905 are the property of the French government and they are responsible for maintaining them. Anyway, for the landmark it is and the tourism it promotes, there will be no shortage of sponsors.

Anyway JR, I wish the best for the French people in getting it reconstructed and open again.

This is because our 1905 law on the Separation of the Churches and State, see : 1905 French law on the Separation of the Churches and the State - Wikipedia

(Titre III, Article 12 and following)

Laïcité is a core concept in the French constitution

This was the answer when a man could not understand how things he'd left on his workshop bench, would be tided away when he returned the next day.  He set up a trail camera to see what was going on, and got quite a surprise.

It's not the same, but for comparison, the Washington Monument was closed for repairs after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake occurred 84 miles away on August 23, 2011 at 1:51 PM. It's expected to reopen later this year. I wonder, since those repairs have taken seven years, how they are coming up with 3-5 for something on the scale of Notre Dame? Wishful thinking, imho.

Fun fact: I was teaching in a basement classroom less than a mile away. We felt the building shake and evacuated, joining thousands of office workers in the streets of D.C.

I love that Trump thought it a good idea to dump several tons of water onto the fragile remains from the fire, and priceless works of art beneath it.

My first thought on reading this was that it was a typical Trump-hating comment ... but then, I realized, not that many people live in or near forested areas where water and retardant drops are used frequently.

And so the ignorance of the comment (about the damage that would have been caused) could simply be ignorance of physical reality. For which a little education is a good thing.

When water falls through atmosphere, it scatters ... quickly. Remember ... oh, rain?

A plane or helicopter delivering water to a fire is of course moving, and frequently at least 500 feet (150 meters) though more commonly because of smoke/terrain, 1,000 feet or more above the fire. 300 meters or better. Over an area with people below, typically at least 1500 feet or near 500 meters.

By the time the water has scattered because of sideways motion and typical reaction of passing through atmosphere, the worst that would be is like a moderately heavy non-tropical rain fall. The biggest problem with air-drops is often simply getting enough "there" to do that much.

And ... when forest fire-fighters are working near "hot" zones, it is not uncommon for drops to be called near or over them. The worst that will happen is they get a light to moderate "rain" for a couple moments.

Each fire-hose of the ground-based firefighters would be putting several times more physical force into the structure than any safely administered air-drop could possibly deliver.

So, there's not much chance such an air-drop could have damaged anything below. The biggest difficulty with an air-drop for this type of situation is simply getting accurate enough with the drop. Air-drop work isn't all that precise. And if the fire is below the roof, of course ... it's not getting directly at the fire.

Could an air-drop have helped? Maybe ... a little. could it have caused massive damage? No. Unless the airplane or chopper itself fell on something, of course.

Neil,

A super scooper dropping tons of water from a relatively few feet up is not a gentle spring rain as you'd have us all believe.  In California, water drops are positioned over wilderness away from  homes, barns, vehicles, horses and especially people.   Dry chemical retardant is sometimes used in urban areas.  But it's not something you want to be standing under.   So you can sugar coat this all you want but Trump is still an idiot .

Fortunately for Notre Dame and Paris, the firefighters and other experts did not agree with either you or POTUS and instead relied on science and common sense to put out the fire in the most appropriate way as to not cause further damage.

Trump encourages France to use 'flying water tankers' for Notre Dame fire

“If you hit that with tons of water from above, that’s going to collapse the entire structure and make the situation worse,” said Wayne McPartland, a retired New York City Fire Department battalion chief. “If you miss, you might hit civilians in the street.”
