I also worked at age 15 back when jobs were filled immediately. Nowadays, businesses post ghost jobs -- jobs that don't exist yet.
Due to high attrition rates, HR depts recruit applicants year round even when they don't have positions to fill. This ensures a steady stream of worthy candidates to call when needed. It's a "hurry up & wait" buzkill for anyone seeking a job in the current marketplace. 😝
I used a temp agency to land my full-time job at a university medical center. At the time, it was the best way to get a foot in the door because HR didn't have the staff or desire to recruit & screen hundreds of applicants. Cold-call applicants rarely if ever got a call back. The trial by fire test lasted 1-2 months after which they offered temps a permanent salaried position with full benefits.
My advice to young college grads is to get an internship if you can. And don't bring your parents to a job interview.
