Some do. Bobbie Hirsch competed on Wayne State's women's fencing team as a freshman last year. This year, the sophomore is fencing on the university's men's team.

In January, Chris Mosier became the first known transgender male athlete to compete in U.S. Olympic Trials.

Currently, there is no direct or consistent research suggesting transgender female or male individuals have an athletic advantage at any stage of their transition.
